How to Mount TVs on the Wall: A Step-by-Step Guide

Mounting your TV on the wall is a great way to save space, stay organized, and enhance your viewing experience. But if you’re new to the process, it can seem a bit daunting – the last thing you want is a busted wall and broken TV.

Below is a step-by-step guide to installing a secure wall mount for your TV.

Step 1: Choose the best wall mount TV for you

The first step is selecting the right wall mount for your home. Wall mounts come in three types: fixed, tilting, and full-motion. Your choice depends on your viewing preferences and room layout.

For example, if you want to see your TV from as many places as possible in your open-concept living room and kitchen, a full-motion mount is your best bet. If you’re installing a wall mount in your home theatre, a fixed mount will do the trick.

Step 2: Gather the necessary tools and materials

Before you start, ensure you have all the tools and materials required. You’ll need:

  • A wall mount suitable for your TV size.
  • A drill and appropriate drill bits.
  • A level.
  • A stud finder.
  • Screws and anchors (often included with the wall mount).
  • A screwdriver.
  • Cable management solutions for hiding the cords on wall-mount TVs.

Step 3: Locate the studs in your wall

Next, you’ll need to find your wall studs. Using a stud finder, locate and mark the studs in the wall where you want to mount the TV. Locating the studs is essential. Drywall alone will not safely hold the weight of your TV. So save yourself the drywall repair and find those studs!

Step 4: Attach the wall mount to the wall

Now that you’ve found the studs, hold the wall mount against the wall. Use a level to ensure it’s straight. Drill pilot holes into the studs, then secure the wall mount with screws.

Step 5: Attach the mounting plate to the TV

Next, you’ll need to attach the mounting plate to the back of your TV. Most wall mounts come with a mounting plate that screws into the TV’s VESA mount holes. Be sure to follow the instructions provided with your mount to ensure a secure fit.

Step 6: Mount the TV on the wall

With the mounting plate securely attached to the TV, it’s time to mount your TV on the wall. This step might require a second person, especially for larger TVs. Carefully lift the TV and hook the mounting plate onto the wall mount. Double-check that everything is secure before letting go.

Step 7: Hide the Cords

Finally, keep everything nice and tidy by hiding the cords. There are several methods for hiding the cords on wall mount TVs, including using cable covers, running the cords through the wall, or using a cord-concealing kit.
