Autumn arrives and the air is filled with the scents of crisp fallen leaves, pumpkin spice everything, and, of course, sawdust and paint. Winter is on it’s way again and preventative maintenance is a smart thing to do! You and your family will be spending a lot more time indoors in the coming few months, so you’ll want to make sure your home is as safe and cozy as possible. Here are four simple fall home projects you can do to make that a reality.

  1. Stay safe – change your smoke/CO detector batteries

You should be changing these batteries at least once a year. Since winter is a high risk time for fires, fall is a good time.  Don’t risk it! Change those smoke alarm and CO detector batteries now so that you can enjoy the winter with more peace of mind.

  1. Stay warm – replace your weather stripping

Of all your fall home projects, this one could save you the most on your heating bills. Replace that old weather stripping in the fall before all that costly warm air tries to squeeze out through the cracks. Weather stripping is cheap and easy to install.

  1. Stay even warmer – install storm doors and windows

Storm doors are essentially doors for your doors; they’re an added layer of winter protection from drafts, debris, and moisture. They are easily installed in front of your current exterior doors. Storm windows are the same, except they’ll help keep heat from sneaking out through your windows. They’re especially useful if you have old, leaky single-pane windows.

  1. Stay frugal – change your furnace filters

If one simple action could save you $100+ a year, would you do it? Like weather stripping, changing your furnace filter is a good way to shave some dollars from your heating bill. Furnace filters get clogged with all kinds of things, like pet dander, hair, and dust. When these clogs are cleared, your furnace works more efficiently, saving you money every day.
